I would like to have children one day.
I began attending church around age 7. I liked the experience right from the first day. I grew up in a mainline church, but it was not until my later teen years that I came to understand the magnitude of Christ's saving work. Prior to that point in time, I was an arminian. I was convinced that Christ was my complete and only Saviour after listening to a taped sermon on the Canons of Dordt, which outline the so-called 5 points of Calvinism as found in the acronym: TULIP (Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irrisistible Grace, Perseverence of the Saints). Since my later teen years, I take time for daily, personal Bible study in the morning before breakfast. I have felt throughout much of my life that living life as a Christian is like swimming upstream. It is an antithetical exercise which cuts against the grain of the culture, and against my fallen sinful nature. I continue to strive for personal growth in knowledge and consitency of life style. It is only because of the Father's election from eternity past, and the work of the Holy Spirit that I am able to make a beginning in the work of sanctifcation in this life. I hope to show my students every day, a Christian life style which expresses itself everywhere I go. Consistency in all areas of life is something that I strive for.
I believe that the Canons of Dordt were amongst some of the first areas of doctrine which affected my life. I believe in the Providence of God, which means that we can expect everything from our Heavenly Father. I believe in Election. God, for reasons unknown to us, selected a certain number people, of which we have no earthly knowledge (except as it pertains to our own person and faith) on which to show His grace, to save from eternal damnation, to buy back (redeem), to perfect, and to have as worshippers throughout all eternity. God's decision is our only grounds for comfort in this life, for if it were left to our own initiative, it would surely fail. I believe in the doctrine of Original Sin & Total Depravity. They are doctrines which show us why we need a Saviour. They teach us why the world is in the state that it is. Overall, doctrines when believed, impart wisdom, stability of perspective, calmness in the face of calamity, humility, and a true sense of purposefulness in this life, and the anticipation of perfection in the New Heaven and New Earth.
My quiet time is at the beginning of each day. This year, I am reading through the New Testament. On Sundays, I usually read through a few pages of Calvin's Institutes. Various books have been helpful to me over the years. Some of those books have been: Schilder's Trilogy, and Douwe Van Dijk's book called: "My Path to Liberation" . Another book which I read this summer was quite helpful called: Total Truth, by Nancy Pearcey -I highly recommend it, for it helps refute evolutionary points of view, and points out the philosophy of secularism and naturalism, so prevalent in our day. ISBN 1-58134-458-9
Selecting my favourite Biblical character is a difficult task. I have never thought too much about who my favourite is. I do like Joseph, son of Isaac, for his seeming lack of self consciousness, his patience, his pursuit of holiness, his honesty. I like Job for his patience and faith in the face of adversity. I like Elijah for his single-minded zeal towards the Lord. I like Samuel for his life-long dedication to the Lord. I like Saint Paul for his wisdom, endurance and perseverance. In each of these cases, God has equipped these men for the task they were to perform.
Am I content? There are times of contentment in my life, but I often wish that I were married. I know that God spoke to Adam and said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper, meet for him." The Lord knows the norms which he has established. The Lord knows my heart. He has heard my prayers. He knows that I long for companionship, for a life-long soul-mate.
I think my friends would see the following attributes in me: sensitivity, loyalty, honesty, and a genteel disposition.
I am most passionate about cultivating a heart-felt love for the Lord in my students --that they desire to pursue a life of holiness. I can be passionate about justice, when I see someone who is very kind and giving, being wrongly treated. I am also passionate about some types of Baroque and Classical music, especially where it involves a text which gives honour to the Word of God. J.S. Bach clearly comes to mind, for his many cantatas, and secondarily, G.F. Handel for some of his oratorios, namely, Messiah. I can be reasonably passionate about taking good care of things such as: compact discs, L.P. records, cars, & antiques.
First, I am thankful for God's electing love and his saving work in Jesus Christ, and that He has seen fit to provide me with a local faithful Church in which to worship and to be instructed in a life of faith. Second, I am thankful for good health. Third, I am thankful for my job which helps me to feel productive and useful. Fourth, I am thankful for God-fearing friends with whom I can speak about the faith, where we can sharpen each other "as iron sharpens iron." I am also thankful for my parents, and the love and support they have shown me down through the years.

I like to be around people who are sensitive, thoughtful, truthful, honest, reliable, modest, considerate, cheerful, authentic, consistent, reflective, people who can laugh at themselves, who possess a clean sense of humour, a dry sense of wit, knowledgeable, reverent, doctrinally astute, having an appreciation for aesthetic qualities, who love baroque and classical music, and who love the Lord, who appreciate and value belonging to a church which is faithful to the scriptures, who is able and willing to discuss deep matters of doctrine and faith.

I am somewhat genteel, soft hearted, curious, loyal, initially reserved, occasionally spontaneous, patient, midly witty, interested in biblical truth, loves baroque & classical music, reflective, even-tempered, a listener, modest and humble (until now).

One person who was very influential in my life was Reverend Raymond Sikkema. He was a very knowledgeable, well read, discerning, wise, zealous minister. I learned much by hearing him preach through the Hiedelberg Catechism and attending some of the profession of faith classes that he taught. John MacArthur is another influential person. He has influenced me through his daily sermons broadcast over radio and internet. I don't always agree with him, such as his understanding of baptism (as he is a Reformed Baptist), yet there are many areas that he and I hold in common, and in those areas I listen to him with great interest and apply those truths to my life through the working of the Holy Spirit.
Previous relationships have been very shallow because I have not yet met a woman who was spiritually, and personally similar to me. It is my sincere hope, that at Sovereign Grace Singles, I may meet someone who confesses the doctrines of the reformed Christian faith, and whose desire it is to live out that truth in a very beautfiul, dynamic way.
Come unto Me, ye who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for My yoke is easy and my burden is light.
My line of work has been varied. Currently I am a teacher in a private, Canadian Reformed, Christian, parental run school. I have taught in the elementary grades for the last eight years. Prior to teaching in a school, I taught music lessons, and was a church organist and choir director after graduating from Redeemer University College. I have also had some factory work experience. I know that I love the kind of work I am presently engaged in, and wish for no other occupation.
One life-long goal is to become married to a godly woman who I will love very much, and Lord willing, with whom I will have children. My wish for those children, is that they grow up to have a strong and abiding faith in the Lord, and that they become productive citizens within society, doing kingdom work, and that they in turn, will desire to find a god-fearing helpmate with whom they will raise up godly seed.
In my spare time I enjoy walking, hiking, reading, listening to music, playing piano or pipe organ, driving, site seeing, going to classical music concerts, looking at antiques, going to antique car shows, going to the beach on really warm days (85 degrees Farenheit and warmer), cross country skiing (not 85 degrees Farenheit!), checking and responding to e-mail, woodworking, playing chess and visiting friends.
In a small town
I was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in Humber Memorial Hospital in the merry month of May, 1971. I lived in Toronto until I was 6 months old, at which time my parents moved north of the city, by about 45 minutes drive, to a small village named, Mono Mills. It was there that I grew up. (My parents still live there 38 years later!) I am not a very widely travelled person. I have travelled as far east as Prince Edward Island with the Redeemer College Choir. I have travelled as far south as Blue Bell, Pensylvania with a friend and his family. I have travelled as far west as Chicago. I have never been on an airplane. // Places where I have lived, besides where I was raised include: St. Catharines, Hamilton, and presently, (for the last 8 years) Fergus Ontario. I do like Fergus, because it is a small, quiet, historic town. It has a number of old homes and several old church buildings made of limestone. The Grand River flows through the middle of town where it cascades over a waterfall and flows through a deep gorge. The population is between ten to twelve thousand souls. Not far away, is the town of Elmira, where there is a fairly high concentration of Mennonite Bretheren. It's beautiful to watch and hear the horse pulled wagons moving about on the streets of Elmira, and to see horses hitched-up outside the back of a store. The old way of life has a certain appeal to it.
I come from a family of five. My parents recently celebrated their 44th anniversary. I am the oldest of their children, with a brother 4 years younger, and a sister 8 years younger. My mother, brother and sister no longer attend church, nor do they seek to find a faithful congregation with which to fellowship. I would say, therefore, that three of the five members of my biological familiy are non-Christians and are eternally lost, unless they repent and seek the Lord while He may be found. This is a daily concern to me. It creates a sense of disunity when I visit with my family, as though it really doesn't feel entirely like home.// I live about 45 minutes drive away from my parents. As they are up in years, and my Dad has experienced a heart attack, I prefer to live reasonably close to them. Relocating would effectively erase my seniority, and could also affect my employment opportunities. In many ways, I would be quite apprehensive of relocating any great distance away.

The questionnaire did not ask my view on children, women and the family. I will proceed to provide a general philosphy that I have so far worked out in my life.

First, I confess that children are a blessing from the Lord. That blessing may be withheld by the Lord, as we see in the early life of Sarai, or Rebekah. I do love children, but also realize that children must be well provided for spiritually, physically and mentally. I believe it is improtant to take into account, the financial situation in which a family finds itself, in determining the size of the family. That decision may not be static, because the situations in which we find ourselves change from year to year. That decision must be arrived at dynamically between the husband and wife. A wife, whose wish it is, to have a "quiver full of children," must mentally prepare herself for how she too will help shoulder the economic load that will surely follow.

I also confess that the ideal life of the woman is to be found in Proberbs 31. Her first line of concern is with maintaining a well ordered home. Secondarily, she may be asked to assist her husband (who is the primary means of income) in an economically productive fashion, ideally through a home-grown cottage industry (e.g. Music, Art lessons, tutoring, spinning, weaving, writing) although some other means by which she may work part-time in kingdom work outside the home finds limited biblical support . Children are to be raised, educated, and admonished by both father and mother. Christian education may be entrusted to a faithful, parentally governed, Christian School when the children are of appropriate age, but the Christian school merely assists the parents in their God given role. The school by no means replaces the moral upbringing that only a father and mother can furnish. The raising of children is not exclusively a woman's line of work, but is also a man's duty. Household chores such as cooking, washing dishes and so forth, may be shared duties. I wish to state that the 1950's approach to family life was not a complete Biblical approach. We need to look at how life was lived prior to the Industrial Revolution, and we need to look closely at the Bible as well, to determine the ideal model for a married man and woman, living together, raising a family. A woman's submission is to her father, and when she becomes married, that submission is transferred to her husband. The submssion a man expects must be reasonable. A man must love and nurture his wife, and family, making decisions as impartially, and as selflessly as possible for the good of the family, just as Christ cares for and nurtures His Bride, the Church.
