I was about six years of age. I strive to keep working out my salvation and evaluting my spiritual walk.
The doctrines of grace were the answer to my restlessness and sense of what was lacking in all the fundamental and standard Baptist churches that I had known since childhood. Often as I’m reading Piper, Augustine, and C. S. Lewis, I marvel at how I spent over twenty years in church each Sunday and never encountered this driving passion in promoting the sovereignty and glory of God. I did wonder for some time “why” I had to be subjected to man-centered religion in my formative years. I think I now have the answer to that question. We writers hold to the idea that nothing bad ever happens to us: it’s all material. I’m working on a collection of essays of “why” I reformed, for all those “fundies” who, in favor of the safe and the black and white, steer from mystery and the wildness of our great big God. Grasping the depravity of man has helped me to understand many of the thoughts and emotions I experience, that once caused me to doubt my faith because I was not “good” and spiffy clean like those in the churches I attended. I understand now they were just masquerade parties, these Christians were so set on avoiding the doctrines of grace that they covered evil with deodorant and long skirts. Healed from all those years, I am steadfast in my faith on the truth that salvation is ALL of Him who calls.
