I was blessed to be raised in a Christian home with a long heritage of faith on both sides of my family tree. I've known Christ since a young age and I really can't point to a time where I didn't know Him. As for my walk, I see areas that could use improvement, especially when it comes to my prayer life and devotions. .
I was raised in a Reformed family, though I didn't come to a systematic knowledge of the doctrines of grace until college. I'd say the biggest impact has been a passion for the sovereignty of God in all things.
I must confess my daily quiet time has been neglected for awhile. I do meet once a week for breakfast and study with a friend. We're mixing it up a bit; instead of our usual theological book we're doing a novel at the moment, Dostoevesky's "Crime and Punishment".
I find Job particularly interesting -- espeically how the book of Job deals with the issues of evil and the sovereignty of God.
It probably depends on when you ask me! I don't think I'm ever completely content being single, though I do recognize that it is God's will for this point in my life. I've reached that point in life where the majority of my peers are married and many have children, which only increases my own desire to have a family.
For the past several years I have worked in a Finance position with the purchasing arm of a major foodservices conglomerate headquartered here in Charlotte. It is actually a long-term temp/contract position since the functions of the team I'm a part of are being automated or transfered to other groups. It has been satifsfying work so far, though its beginning to slow down and I also think I've reached the point where I'm ready for something new and challenging. I had been hopeful of finding a permanent position with my current company, but unfortunately the position came to an end at the end of May without anything opening up.
While nothing permanemnt came of my temp work, it did get me interested in accounting as a career path. I have just been accepted into the Master of Accountancy program at UNCC. I'm currently in the process of taking some prerequisite classes I need since I wasn't an accounting major in college.
I'm also interested in working for the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer. It is sort of my Plan B, since the percentage of people actually making it through is very low. I took the initial test in October '09 and just missed the cutoff score to make it to the next step in the process. You have to wait a year to retake the test, which at the moment am planning to do. It is a long application process; assuming I pass the test on my next try it'll probably take another 9-12 months to make it through all the subsequent steps in the hiring process.
It may already be obvious since I am on this site, but I do desire to become a husband a father! I was a history major in college and while I don't see myself doing anything career-wise with that degree, I'd like to find some way to utilize my love of history. Who knows, maybe I have a book in me somewhere!
I probably watch too much tv and movies. I especially love the classic movies on TCM. I greatly enjoy reading, though I find that these days I have to specifically set aside time in my schedule for reading otherwise it never happens. (I usually try to read in bed for 30-60 minutes before I turn out the light for the night.) Having been a history major in college a lot of my nonfiction reading is historical in nature. I'm particularly interested in military history (Civil War, Vietnam), antebellum Southern history, and church history. My fiction tends to be scifi and mysteries -- I tend to like to use my fiction reading for an escape! A couple of years ago I also started trying to expand my musical horizons beyond CCM to things like jazz, folk, and bluegrass. (I am, however, just a listner, not a performer.) Among the performers I like are Over the Rhine and Sufjan Stevens. Awhile back I purchased an XM radio and mostly keep it on The Loft, which plays acoustic rock, their classical station, and their old time radio station (Jack Benny, Dragnet, etc).
I was born in SC and raised in NC, with a few years overseas in Papua New Guinea when my parents were missionaries. In the US I've visited most of the southeast states along with places like Colorado, Montana, Missouri, and I also did a summer internship in Washington State. Overseas I've also visited Singapore and Peru.
I have two parents who a still happily married to each other after over thirty years. I have one younger brother. My parents are here in NC, about two hours away from me, and my brother is in SC. I'm going to be in grad school for the next 2-3 years, so relocation isn't really an option for me.
