John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Can a christian listen to/watch non-religious songs/movies?

Recommended Posts

Personally I believe that a christian should not listen to the songs that are explicit and contain harsh words and shouldn't watch movies which involves sexual immorality, violence and occult

But what about those which are morally neutral?

which may not cause our spiritual growth but aren't evil either?

one of my friends said that a Christian shouldn't listen to wordly music/movies even if they're neutral in nature.

As they are distracting and takes us away from God?

This song has nothing to do with God. Someone told me that a christian should only listen religious songs. Secular music is satanic

Sang this song 65+ years ago it still has value

Oh, be careful little eyes, what you see.
There's a Father up above, looking down in love,
So be careful little eyes, what you see.

Be careful little ears what you hear
Oh, be careful little ears, what you hear.
There's a Father up above, looking down in Love,
So be careful little ears, what you hear.

Be careful little mouth what you say
Oh, be careful little mouth, what you say.
There's a Father up above, looking down in tender love,
So be careful little mouth, what you say.

Be careful little hands, what you touch
Oh, be careful little hands, what you touch.
There's a Father up above, looking down in tender love,
So be careful little hands, what you touch.

Be careful little feet, where you go
Oh, be careful little feet, what you go.
There's a Father up above, looking down in tender love,
So be careful little feet, what you go

There is no logic to this at all. If they carry this logic out to its conclusion they also cannot hold a secular job, go to a secular club, be a member of a secular organization, etc.

Then you are very conservative strict Christian.

And I am moderate Christian.

so we both will have different views regarding which song is acceptable and which one is not.

Nope. I ain't but after this claim I'm a bit skeptical of watching/listening to secular music/movies

I would be careful even with movies and music that aren't dirty because there's still ungodly messages in many of them. Movies especially are designed to pull you over to liberal agendas.

And if your the type who easily becomes submerged into fantasy then it's a good idea to limit yourself on movies.

Honestly I believe this topic for the stuff that is not immoral is a matter of Christian liberty.

Back in the early 60s within the Christian circles i grew up in movies were a sin. I am having a 'discussion' with mom. It went something like this. short version.... . Why are movies a sin we could go 'park' at the beach or up in the valley. Why do we have a TV in the house that shows old movies... Mom relented saying some thing like this. "ok Beck don't go see any movie you would not take Jesus with ya to see". Mom's statement is something that has stuck with me for almost 60 years now. I judge what I watch or read etc by those words.  Every so often it hits, oops i should not be watching this.

1Co 10:23  All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

Christian liberty – what does the Bible say? Does Christian liberty mean we can live our lives however we want to?

I do believe there is a ton of junk and filth on TV.

But I do think that watching shows that aren't specifically from a Christian perspective is okay.

For example, what about shows about history (world history, american history, etc.)? Shows about health and exercise or how to build and repair things. There are myriads of other topics as well.

I also believe that while watching with family members and friends you (and others) can look at them and discuss them from a Christian perspective. If it is on exercise it can be mentioned that godliness is far more important but yet bodily exercise does at least have some value (1 Timothy 4:8).

There are still some tv shows that do not contain 'junk'.

The guy in that video thinks that those morally neutral shows are also satanic.

He says 'what does not take you to god , takes you away from him.

While 1 Corinthians 10:23 says the otherwise.

Basically he's trying to say that there is no grey shade. It's either black or white.

Or just the day and the night without the twilight. Whatever makes sense to you.

What he is saying is rather drastic.

If taken seriously, all but a few people dwelling in caves would be doomed.
