John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

One thing God can’t do

God is omnipotent.  That means he has the power to do whatever he wants.  But the Bible tells us there is one thing he can’t do which you or I or any other human can do easily.

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath,so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.

Hebrews 6:17,18 ESV

This doesn’t just say that God doesn’t lie; it says that he can’t lie.  In spite of this many Christians accuse God of starting his revelation of himself, the Bible, with a series of lies.  Most people today believe that the earth is 4.5 billion years old.  The Bible says God created it in six days.  If the earth is really billions of years old then God lied about its age.  If God lied in the first chapter of Genesis how can we trust anything he says in the rest of the Bible?

Some try to eliminate the contradiction by saying that the days of creation aren’t literal days but long periods of time.  The word “day” has many meanings and sometimes it does refer to a long period of time.

Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says,

“In a favorable time I listened to you,
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

2 Corinthians 6:1,2 ESV

“Day of salvation” does not refer to a 24 hour day but to the period of time when the opportunity to be saved is available.  If you read Genesis 1 carefully you will find that this interpretation does not apply to the days of creation.

God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Genesis 1:5 ESV

Each of the six days consisted of an evening and a morning.  That means that each lasted for one rotation of the earth.

The belief that the earth is old came about because most scientists assume that the natural processes going on today have always gone on and that God has never intervened.  If you accept that belief you must believe the earth is billions of years old.  But if that assumption is wrong then all of the conclusions based on it are also wrong.

In order to interpret the scientific evidence it is necessary to correctly answer one question: was the universe created by God or did it come about by natural processes?  There is a way to find out which answer is correct and that is by examining dinosaur fossils.  If God had no part in creating the world that means the fossils are millions of years old, but if the Bible is correct the fossils are a result of the worldwide flood in Noah’s time and are only about 4,500 years old.  Some dinosaur bones contain tissue that is still soft.

In 2005, a team of scientists led by paleontologist Mary Schweitzer published a paper in which they described an unusual femur (upper leg bone) of a Tyrannosaurus rex. While the outer bone was completely fossilized, the interior regions were somehow sealed off from fossilizing fluids. Inside the T. rex femur were intact blood vessels and red blood cells. Once freed from the bones, the blood vessels could be stretched—and even snapped back into place!

The paper produced a storm of media and scientific attention. At issue: the T. rex fossil is believed by evolutionists to be 68 million years old. How could these biological structures survive intact?

Shortly after, Schweitzer and her colleagues made more headlines with a second paper. This one described intact proteins from the T. rex femur. The problem: laboratory tests and theoretical research have shown that proteins similar to those seen in the T. rex fossil degrade too quickly—even in ideal laboratory conditions—to survive for more than a few thousand years.

This proves that the bones cannot be millions of years old as most people believe.  This evidence is ignored or explained away by those who are unwilling to admit that God is our creator.  The belief in an old earth is so much a part of our culture that even many Christians are convinced it is true.  They don’t realize that any Christian who believes in an old earth is not only rejecting scientific evidence but is also calling God a liar.

I believe God clearly differentiated between days and years in Genesis 1:14. If He wanted for us to think in terms of years when it refers to days I don't think that distinction would have been made.

And in terms of dating bones even there I would be careful to not make assumptions about the earth being billions of years old because if one encountered Adam and Eve the very first day they were created I don't think they looked like what a boy and girl looks like today when they are only a day old.

I believe you're referring to the appearance of age. Lots of people suggest that God cannot lie therefore he would not mislead people by creating an universe with the appearance of age. Here we may see that they mistakenly attribute God's creation as God. Following the logic through we too shouldn't be able to lie also. But in creation or the natural universe we see what many misinterpret in distant stars long dead remain evidenced by the light they once gave off. And we as God's creation do lie.

Now a lot of people also suggest that we put God in a box if we list things God cannot do, but this "box" was created by God through His attributes and characteristics as God is the standard bearer for not only the attributes evidenced but in us to a lesser degree which now poorly reflects being made in His image. And because of Original Sin we God's creation no longer reflect a clear image of God or His Holiness, for if we were truly like God despite the Serpent's teaching we'd be without sin. The inability to lie is not a weakness or lack of omnipotence pertaining to God as being truthful overcoming the sinful practice of lying demonstrates more strength rather than the contrast.

Oftentimes people attempt to snare Christians by asking the question, "Can God create a rock too heavy for Him to lift"? The answer is framed and one that poses a problem for some Christians. If the Christian says there is something that cannot be done by God then the opponent proves that God cannot do everything as though everything requires omnipotence or is desirable. But to answer the question, Yes, God can create a rock too heavy for Him to lift simultaneously through the 2nd Person or Son Jesus Christ in all His humanness and frailty. However, that's not how the question was framed. The question is made to exploit misunderstood meaning attributed to omnipotence by the opponent. The answer that the opponent seeks is actually the right one, no, God cannot lie, but that says nothing against true omnipotence, an attribute of God who is the standard bearer for omnipotence.
