John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Negligent Homicide

The Law of Moses speaks of negligent homicide where it says, "When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof." Deut 22:8?

Whether an individual is renting out real estate and disregarding issues of safety, or whether a large corporation disregards the safety of its employees, its customers, or neighbors, there are many such cases of negligent homicide. "Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life." Lev 19:16b

Often these are either a function of greed in which the safety concern is known, but the risk taken for the sake of profit, or they're just do to plain laziness, as it is written, "One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys." Pr 18:9

Yet we can also say that by neglecting the work of the kingdom, many Christians are also involved in negligent homicide, as it says, "Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, 'But we knew nothing about this,' does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to what he has done?" Prov 24:11,12

The solution to negligent homicide is to learn to love your neighbor as yourself. And in particular to consider what safety concerns you should deal with of which you would be concerned if you were in their situation.
