John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. David was not worshiped in 1 Chronicles 29:20

1 Chronicles 29:20

And David said to all the congregation, Now bless the LORD your God. And all the congregation blessed the LORD God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the LORD, and the king. (KJV) 

 

 The underlined above and below is mine.

 Some have claimed that just because the Lord Jesus was/is the proper recipient of worship does not mean He is God because David also received worship but this doesn't mean that David is God.

 

 This argument is not sustainable because there are other passages in 2 Chronicles that use the same construction as 1 Chronicles 29:20 which demonstrate that only God is being rendered worshiped.
2 Chronicles 31:8 
When Hezekiah and the rulers came and saw the heaps, they blessed the LORD and His people Israel. (NASB) 
 Blessing the Lord means offering Him worship but that doesn't mean Hezekiah and the rulers rendered worship unto the people of Israel. 
2 Chronicles 35:3 
He also said to the Levites who taught all Israel and who were holy to the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel built; it will be a burden on your shoulders no longer. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel. (NASB) 
 Josiah (cf. 2 Chronicles 35:1) did not mean that the service (worship) that ought to be given unto God was also to be done unto the people of Israel. 


 In all three passages (1 Chronicles 29:20; 2 Chronicles 31:8 and 2 Chronicles 35:3) worship is only offered unto God.[*1] 

 

The same also holds true concerning Proverbs 24:21 which reads: 

My son, fear the LORD and the king. (NASB) 

 To “fear the Lord” encompasses worshiping the Lord, but this doesn’t mean the king should be worshiped. 

 Finally, the ending of 2 Corinthians 8:5 ought also to be considered for it reads:  

 but they first gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God. (NASB) 

  Only the Lord Jesus is worshiped[*2] in 2 Corinthians 8:5 and not other people.  

 

 

[*1] The only other passage in the Old Testament that I have encountered that some people cite in their attempt to to diminish (destroy?) the importance of the worship properly rendered unto the Lord Jesus is Isaiah 45:14. In the Septuagint proseuchontai (prayed) is used. From the Complete Jewish Bible (CJB):

 Here is what Adonai says: “The earnings of Egypt, the commerce of Ethiopia, and men of stature from S’va will come over to you and become yours; they will come in chains and follow you. They will prostrate themselves before you; they will pray to you: ‘Surely God is with you; there is no other, other gods are nothing.’”

 This doesn't present any problem because people have prayed unto God when they addressed others (1 Samuel 20:12; cf. 1 Corinthians 14:25). The Lord Jesus was prayed to that His will would be done when certain believers responded to Paul (Acts 21:14). In fact, worshiping the Lord Jesus involves speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19).

 

[*2] Simon Kistemaker: The closer in fellowship Christians are to the Lord, the more they show their love toward each other. They must make Jesus Christ central in their lives, so that he may receive honor, praise, and glory (New Testament Commentary: 2 Corinthians, page 276).
